How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator
- Enter the trip distance.
- Enter your vehicle’s fuel economy and the fuel price.
- See the total fuel needed, cost and cost per person.
How fuel cost is calculated
Fuel used = distance ÷ fuel economy (or distance × L/100 km ÷ 100). Cost = fuel used × price per unit. The calculator converts between miles, kilometers, US gallons, UK gallons and liters for you.
Tips to save fuel
- Keep tyres at the recommended pressure — under-inflation can cost 1–3% in fuel economy.
- Drive smoothly; hard acceleration and braking waste fuel.
- Above about 50–60 mph (80–100 km/h), economy drops quickly with speed.
- Remove roof racks and extra weight when not needed.
Compare two vehicles for the same trip
Use the same trip, fuel price and economy unit to compare a second vehicle. The difference covers fuel only; tolls, maintenance and other costs are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my car’s fuel economy?
Check your dashboard trip computer or the manufacturer’s figures (real-world economy is usually 10–20% worse).
Does it work for electric cars?
Use kWh/100 km as L/100 km and your electricity price per kWh as the price per liter.
