How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% now common in cities. For counter service, 10% or rounding up is typical. Many other countries include service in the bill, and tipping is optional or small — in Japan, it is generally not expected at all.
Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?
Etiquette guides traditionally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. If you want to do that, tick “Tip on pre-tax amount” and enter the tax shown on your receipt.
